The size with the most writing room

Letter is 215.9 x 279.4 mm, which is the widest of the four sizes we offer and gives the most room per day. Every layout in the library is available at Letter, including the ones that do not fit on A5 or Half Letter.

It is also the sheet that Half Letter comes from: two Half Letter pages fit on one Letter sheet at exactly 100% with zero slack, which is the cleanest imposition of any size pair.

Getting the margins right

Every file has 12.7 mm, half an inch, on all four sides. That is not an aesthetic choice; it is the smallest single value that clears every printer specification we could find.

The published minimums vary more than people expect. Brother mono lasers reserve 4.23 mm all round. HP Officejets report 3.3 mm on Windows but 12 mm at the bottom on macOS and Linux. Several Epson models reserve 15 mm at the bottom on cut-sheet media. Canon auto-duplex takes another 2 mm off the top. A margin that works on one of those is not a margin that works on all of them.

Print settings

Choose Actual size or 100%, never Fit to page or Shrink to fit. The file already requests this: it carries a PrintScaling setting of None in its catalogue, which pre-selects Actual size in most print dialogs. It is one line in the PDF and almost nobody in this category sets it.

For double-sided printing on portrait sheets, flip on the long edge. The file requests that too.
