Why a spread rather than a page

Six to seven writing lines a day is what most commercial planners advertise, and it needs roughly 48mm of vertical run per day. Across seven days that is 336mm, which is taller than any sheet we offer. A spread is not a premium version of a single page; it is the only geometry that reaches that line count.

This is also the layout the ring-binder world has always used. Week on two pages, usually shortened to WO2P, is standard vocabulary in the Filofax and personal-organiser community, and it is the default for A5 and Personal inserts.

Binding margins and which side they go on

On a spread the punched edge alternates: the left page is punched on its left, the right page on its right. Getting that backwards puts the writing area under the rings on every second sheet, and it is a mistake that is invisible until the pages are in a binder.

The margin allowance depends on the system. Six-ring A5 and Half Letter get 15mm on the punched edge; Personal and Pocket get 12.7mm; disc-bound Classic gets 19.05mm. Pick your binding in the generator and the margins mirror automatically.

Printing a spread

Print double-sided with the flip on the long edge for portrait sheets. The file sets this in the print dialog for you. If you want the spread to open correctly in a binder you may need one blank leading page so that pages one and two land on facing sheets rather than on the front and back of one.
