Why subjects are rows
Planning one lesson at a time produces a week where each subject makes sense on its own and none of them relate. A grid with subjects as rows shows you the arc across the week: what Monday sets up for Thursday, where the assessment lands, which subject has quietly lost a session to an assembly.
It is also the format most schools want for a submitted plan, because it can be read in one pass.
The hours box
Each cell has a small box in the corner for time. It is optional for most teachers and essential for some: in several jurisdictions instructional hours per subject are a reporting requirement rather than a nicety.
