Hours are the reason this sheet is different

Most homeschool planners are a lesson grid. In high-regulation states that is not enough, because what has to be reported is instructional hours per subject, not lessons covered.

New York, for example, requires the substantial equivalent of 180 days a year, 900 instructional hours for grades one to six and 990 for grades seven to twelve, and quarterly reports stating the hours of instruction, the material covered in each subject and a grade or narrative evaluation for each. Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maryland and Ohio have comparable requirements. Texas, Illinois and Oklahoma have no attendance requirement at all.

So every subject-day cell on this sheet has a small hours box, and each subject row ends in a weekly total. Adding up at the end of a quarter then takes minutes rather than an evening of reconstruction.

What this sheet is not

It is a record-keeping aid, not legal advice, and it does not claim compliance with anything. Requirements vary by state and change; check yours with your state department of education or a homeschool legal organisation before relying on any format.

What it does is make the recording habit cheap enough to actually keep, which is the part that usually fails.

More than one child

Print one sheet per child. It is tempting to fit several children on one page, and it works badly: subject rows differ by age, and a shared sheet means every child's week is constrained by the one with the most subjects. Separate sheets also make the per-child hour totals usable, which is how they have to be reported anyway.
