Why an academic year rather than a calendar year

Because a school or university year does not restart in January. A calendar planner asks you to change books in the middle of a term, which is exactly when you least want to move everything across. An academic file starts in August and ends in June, so one book covers one year of teaching or study.

It also puts the quiet months at the ends rather than the middle. A calendar planner has its emptiest pages in July and August, buried in the centre of the book.

For students and for teachers

Students usually want the hourly grid, because the useful thing a planner does is show where the free hours actually are between fixed classes. Print the class timetable separately, once a term, and pin it up: it is undated and it stays correct all year.

Teachers usually want the horizontal layout for their own week and a separate lesson plan grid for the teaching itself. Trying to do both on one sheet does neither well, because one is organised by clock time and the other by subject.

Print settings

These are long files, so print the range you need rather than the whole book: most print dialogs take a page range, and the index at the front tells you which pages a given month occupies. Print at 100% or Actual size, never Fit to page. The file already requests it.
