The density most planners settle on

Half an hour is the unit most meetings, classes and appointments actually use, and thirty-minute rows are the density at which a fifteen-hour day still fits legibly on one sheet. Go finer and the day shrinks; go coarser and you lose the ability to place anything precisely.

Rows come out around 8.6mm on Letter and A4, which is above the 7.1mm college-ruled comfort standard. On A5 and Half Letter in landscape the rows are tighter but stay above the 6.35mm floor.
