Why weekly
A monthly budget tells you at the end of the month that something went wrong three weeks ago. A weekly one tells you on Sunday, while there is still something to be done about it.
It also matches how spending actually happens: a weekly shop, a weekly commute, a weekly set of small decisions. Monthly categories hide those inside a number that is too big to act on.
Categories on the right
The expense side has a category column as well as an amount, so a week of entries can be totalled by type without re-sorting. Keep the categories few. Five or six that you actually distinguish between beats twenty that you guess at.
